Author Sarah Lister on Kinder Scout

"Kinder Scout is a unique mountain. Honestly, there isn’t another mountain in Britain like it. But it’s a complex place and many of its treasures lie very well hidden. It can take visitors years to discover the finest corners – IF they even find them, that is. And I speak from experience. I first visited Kinder back in 1988 and I still don’t feel I fully know it.

Well, this beautiful little guidebook offers first-time and even repeat visitors like myself a handy shortcut to getting to know Kinder Scout. The routes within it are varied, well-described, clearly mapped, always interesting, and extremely well thought out. They cover the entire hill. Follow all fifteen routes and a visitor will achieve insights into Kinder that might otherwise take years to gain. I wish I’d had this guidebook when I first stepped onto Kinder!

The author, Sarah Lister, is clearly a fan of this mountain. And an expert in it, given the knowledge she shares. Her love for Kinder shines from every page. As she writes in the intro: ‘Kinder Scout is a mountain to return to time and time again…’ and she’s dead right – this is a mountain that rewards repeat visits. In truth, it only grows more special each time back. The author is obviously someone who HAS returned time and time again and has fallen under Kinder’s spell. I’d bet she’s written this guide because of it. ‘Mountain Walks Kinder Scout’ is as much a love letter to Kinder as it is a guidebook.

The one small criticism I have is entirely unfair. The guidebook is pocket-sized, which it has to be – it’s the perfect size for taking onto the hill. But the photos are so beautiful and evocative they deserve to appear far, far larger – in a coffee-table book, for example. I’ve lost count of how much time I’ve now spent flicking through the pages, lingering over the photos, reliving past walks on the hill, dreaming about future walks. But perhaps, on reflection, that’s just another reason to praise this guide. It doesn’t only do the job a guidebook should – and do it well – but it also does more: it inspires, too. Pick up this guidebook and you’ll soon be dreaming and longing to be up on Kinder Scout yourself."
